Kauppakatu in Jyväskylä
In the early 1900s, Jyväskylä’s Kauppakatu (Market Street) was the centre of local business and activity. This photograph shows the commercial heart of the town with its mix of wooden and masonry buildings lining the wide, unpaved street. Horse-drawn carts were still a common sight, used for transporting goods and people.
Signs on the buildings advertise a variety of businesses, including banks and shops. The mix of architectural styles reflects a growing town in transition—modernising, but still rooted in its wooden-town past. The street is relatively quiet, yet clearly structured for everyday commerce and connection.
