Flensborgintörmä: A Quiet Corner of Old Porvoo
This quiet street scene was captured by photographer Natalia Linsén, one of the few women working professionally in the field in late 19th-century Finland. The photo shows Flensborgintörmä, a steep cobblestone slope in Porvoo, with Välikatu intersecting at the bottom. Several children and young people are scattered throughout the view, standing at doorways or walking along the winding street. The wooden buildings, modest in scale, sit snugly along the hill, their stone foundations exposed where the slope drops away.
Linsén’s photographs are valuable visual records of everyday life in Porvoo, showing not just its landmarks but its lived-in, residential corners. Her work gives us a chance to see the kinds of neighborhoods that rarely appeared in grand architectural views.
